The Book of Ruth

This coming week sees the start of Shavout on the Jewish Calendar and it is the tradition to read the book of Ruth. It is one of the shortest books in the bible. It is read for several reasons including the fact that it is set during the grain harvest. It contains the declaration of Ruth to her mother-in-law that is part of conversion ceremonies to this day. She is a Moabitess and marries Boaz. From this mixed marriage comes the entire line of David.
