The Burning Bridge by Poul Anderson

In this 1960 story by Poul Anderson, government is not to be trusted. A group who believe in openness and transparency has elected to leave and are aboard a fleet of 15 vessels on a 40 year voyage to the only inhabitable planet discovered so far. A message is received from earth indicating changes have taken place that make returning an option. In this story the realities of space travel are treated well. Acceleration and deceleration take serious amounts of time. They are nearly at the point where going onto their destination or returning is a tossup.
