The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde

An American family buys Canterville Chase, a property that comes with a ghost whether you want him or no. Sir Simon de Canterville, the ghost, who has scared people to death and madness for 300 years is in turn scared back into his quarters by the twins. As a child I saw the movie with Margaret O’Brien and Charles Laughton. It has been done on TV a number of times but no one actually went back to Oscar Wilde’s original story. No screenwriter can approach his level of wit.
