The Legends of the Jews by Louis Ginzberg

This collection of legends was published in 1909 and is available in English translation at The footnotes aren’t part of the Gutenberg file and the text requires lots of them.
Midrash is a term used to describe a story invented to fill in missing information or motives. Folklore includes stories that might be inspired or over-the-top. The text contains all of the above. So far I’ve only done readings of the chapters concerning the creation myth. (Pleased do not try any of the medical folklore given in the chapter for the 6th day.)
